The DDE is an internationally-recognised qualification and a key step on the journey to a career in teaching Dance.

About the course

DPA offers the DDE qualification in Tap Dance. The ISTD’s Level 4 DDE is an achievable and streamlined teaching qualification, which provides student teachers with a clear progression pathway to becoming an ISTD qualified teacher (either Licentiate or Level 6 Diploma in Dance Pedagogy) and an overall brilliant introduction to a career in teaching dance.

This course comprises the following five units:

  • Unit 1: Preparing for Safe Teaching (15 credits at Level 3)
  • Unit 2: Observing, Assisting and Teaching Practice (30 credits at Level 4)
  • Unit 3: Vocational Graded Examination in Dance: Intermediate (28 credits at Level 3)
  • Unit 4: Dance Practice (30 credits at Level 4)
  • Unit 5: Social, Emotional and Cognitive Development (17 credits at Level 4)

View full details about the DDE Level 4 at the ISTD website »

These units can be taken individually, although they all link to one another ensuring a depth of knowledge which prepares student teachers thoroughly for the studio and the start of their teaching journey. The course is also open to Dancers who have already completed some units and are looking to complete the remaining units for this qualification.

Whilst it is not a requirement to have previous ISTD training, you will need to take the ISTD Intermediate Exam of your chosen genre. If you are not sure about whether you have enough experience for this course, please get in touch and our Course Leader Kalli Cheatle will be happy to chat with you. This course is open to students aged 17 and over.

The DDE course can also be included as part of your full-time training on our D16 Performing Arts College BTEC in Musical Theatre – apply through our full-time training page and speak with the Dance team at your audition.

Praise For DPA

My 2 children have been attending DPA for a year. They have been welcomed into this nurturing environment like family. They have grown in confidence and love the very many classes they attend. The staff are amazing, caring and encouraging. I cannot recommend highly enough.

Sophy E

What we both love about DPA is the support all students give each other and how they all celebrate individual or group successes regardless of their own involvement. She has made many friends and considers herself very much one of the DPA family.

Rachel B - Parent

DPA is amazing and my second family, we work through struggles and learn how to be better performers because of it.
